I am entering the war and seeing what the deal is with Carve The Mark by Veronica Roth. 

To preface this I must first say that I choose to read this book because I honestly want to see what I can learn from it as a writer and as a human being and to see how many issues that have reflected in this book will make themselves known to me. 

I also would like to say I have a research paper to write for my college ethical systems class and after all the talk about this book I wanted to give it a go and see what I took from it and what kind of discussion I can develop from the narrative. I am going into this book with the full knowledge of the issues that have been discussed and I want to delve in and create my own informed opinion. 

The paper is due at the end of April and so I will be starting my reading now and taking extensive notes and searching for in-depth information on the topic and how harmful it may or may not be. This discussion will touch on either the themes of race, self-harm, or chronic pain. 

I do not yet know what argument I will be making and I do not yet know how this will be received. What I am curious about is if any of you would be interested in reading the paper or having a shorter version of it posted as a discussion on this blog. 

I also would like to know if there are any sources or discussions you have read about the book that could be of help to me in writing this paper. I know that this is a particularly emotionally triggering book and that there have been so many passionate voices on this topic. Please be kind and thoughtful in the comments.

  1. I haven’t read Carve the Mark but I would definitely be interested in reading your paper or an excerpt of it if you made it into a shorter discussion for your blog. Either way, it sounds really interesting and I wish you the best of luck in researching topics for your paper and also in taking your own stance on the book.

  2. Absolutely interested in reading your paper! I’m actually working on an author review about her and part of the reason is that when I heard about this book it made me not want to read it or anything else that she writes because of the racial aspect of it. She did write a response to the controversy surrounding race in the book and that ultimately is what was the deciding factor in why I wont read her work anymore.     1. Thank you! I look forward to writing it. It does seem like everyone has been very bothered by this book and I wanted to do something a bit more in depth in relation to it. I hope that when I post my paper that it will be interesting and informative. From what I’ve read of Carve the Mark, I will have quite a bit to work with.

  7. This sounds like it could be a fascinating study. I was unaware of the proposed issues in this book until a twitter/instagram war broke out about it not long ago. Several other bloggers I was following were up in arms about self mutilation themes in the book. I haven’t read the book so I can’t make comment on it but it was interesting to follow. I do find it fascinating that group was “discussing” (more obscenely shouting) self mutilation aspects and didn’t, to my recollection, bring in the racial topic you mentioned. Even without having read the book all the talk surrounding it is entertaining. Looking forward to your take.

    1. From what I’ve been hearing about the book there have been several layers of discussion around it. The self-mutilation being one and then racism and chronic pain being others. I’ve ever heard talk about the language used and even religion. It’s going to be interesting to talk about and I hope I can make an informative and careful discussion about the book.

  9. I’m interested in reading your paper as well. I had Carve the Mark on my TBR and since I am an active member on Twitter in the community, I decided that I wasn’t going to read the book after things that I had seen from people who were and harmed by the book.
