Over the course of my short life of 18 years walking this earth I have struggled with various issues with myself that I normally don’t talk about, but there is one issue that has progressed extremely negatively in recent years and that is my use of nasal sprays.

I know, I know, your thinking what the heck? How is that even a thing, but I’m here to tell you that it’s gotten to the point that for over a year I could not breath through my nose without spraying it every few hours or so every single day. Another thing you might be thinking is why is this such a big deal?

Well, for starters needing to use nasal spray in public is an extremely embarrassing thing for me. Sticking a spray up my nose and inhaling like some sort of drug addict always made me feel super self-conscious and all the while while the spray was a temporary solution it was doing major damage to my health (at least for where congestion is concerned). My nose has adapted to the ingredients in the spray so well that when I take it I rarely even get fully decongested any more and I’m constantly blowing my nose and sniffiling and that’s a whole other sort of embarrassment.

Every time I pick up that spray bottle I see a future with me never being able to live without it and thinking that way is making it so it’s harder and harder for me to be able to live life to the fullest. So, I did a bunch of research on it and the only way for me to cut the dependency fully is to quit cold turkey. (There are a few other methods, but I find that this is what would work best for me). So this morning I took my last dose of spray and I’m finally going to quit using the spray for good.

From my research this process will take anywhere from about a few days to a few weeks before I can heal fully and breathe normally again and right now I can’t breathe at all. The hardest part is going to be getting through the anxiety of not being able to breathe which was the monster that drove me to my dependency in the first place. If I can push through this and start to feel healthier again it will be one of the biggest reliefs of my life.

If you do ever have congestion issues please don’t use nasal drops. In the short term they are fantastic, but in the long run it can cause major issues to your health.

Thank you for reading! I know this is a strange post, but after finding out how dangerous it was to use drops the way I have been using them I had to share. If I could help anyone with my story that may have this issue it would be a blessing. This is going to be a hellish few weeks, but in the end my future health is what is most important.

-Till next time!

  1. 😮 You mean you were never told it’s not healthy to use them for periods longer than three days, a week maximum at a time? I know they’re generally sold over the counter, but I find it very irresponsible of your doctor/pharmacist that they never told you. Hope you feel batter soon. By the way, maybe you can try a saline solution for this transition period. It may help a little with the congestion, and since it’s only salt water, it’s quite safe.

    1. I never told a doctor or a pharmacist and my mom had been using them like that for a long time so I didn’t realize it was a bad thing. All I knew for a long long time was that when I couldn’t breathe it would allow me to breathe. It wasn’t until recently that I started feeling worse and worse and the drops were working less and less and I knew something was up. It was really ignorant of me not to do any research or anything until now, but I simply never thought anything was wrong or at least I didn’t want to. I am using a saline solution for now plus some or those nose strips you put on top of your nose so you can breathe a little while you sleep. Surprisingly right now I can breathe a bit through one nostril, but the headache is real! Thank you for the helpful comment! I really appreciate it.

  2. What has helped me with congestion, is using a netti pot when I need it, it’s all natural and isn’t damaging to my health, I go to a chiropractor for sinus stimulation which has really helped. I suffer from seasonal allergies and since I’ve been going to the chiropractor I have felt so much better. I also only use my nasal sprays when I absolutely need to which and I haven’t needed to use them since April, and I never used them every day every few hours either.

    1. Yeah I’m starting to use a version of the Neti pot myself and it’s helping quite a bit. I’ve never heard of the chiropractor thing, but I’ll definitely look into it for the future! It’s good that you use nasal spray very sparingly. I never realized how bad they were for you until I started to get worse and worse. I’m happy to say I’m staying away from them from now on. Thank you for the awesome and helpful comment! 🤗❤️

        1. Yes that’s something I read about as well. It terrified me to think that I could have been doing that to my own body without even thinking to look for any consequences. It was for that reason and the fact that my dependency has gotten so advanced that I knew I had to stop immediately.

    1. Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support! It felt really weird to finally say something about this anywhere to anyone, but this community is so awesome and I figured if my story came as a warning to anyone else who may not have known about it like I didn’t it would all be worth it. Thank you! ❤️

    1. Thank you! So far it’s going better then expected. I can kinda breathe a little from one side, and I slept alright so I’m feeling like this process won’t be as terrible as I thought. Thank you for the support! I really appreciate it! ❤️

  4. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I can relate to this post! I was once able to give up nasal sprays but after starting for the second time, I haven’t stopped. I am doing my hardest to stop but I have extremely bad headaches if I don’t take them, I even sought out help from the doctors, hopefully, I’ll be able to stop using them too.
    Good luck to you! ❤

    1. Ohh I’m so sorry that you have gone through this too! The headache thing is definitely true for me too. My headache right now is constant and painful, it’s really difficult when you feel like you need to have that quick relief and you can’t breathe. I hear that the doctors can give an oral steroid for a week for relief for the first week when you start quitting. I’m so so sorry to hear that you are currently going through that. If you ever need support know that I’m cheering for you! 😊❤️

  5. I bet a lot of people can relate. It didn’t get as bad with me, but when I get congested / a cold – my entire nose if completely blocked. Nasal sprays helped, but the pharmacist had given serious warnings about its continued use. Good luck – I really hope you feel better soon. It looks like you’ve been trying quite a few different things and hopefully something works for you 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for the support! It really means a lot to me. I surprisingly was able to sleep through the night and can sort of breathe through one side. I was never given any of those warnings and never read the warning on the bottle because I simply thought it was all going to be ok. I know it’s going to be a hard week or so from here on out, but I’m determined to make it work. I don’t want to be dependent on something that hurting my health any longer.
