I like to think of myself as a genre mafioso if you will. I’m willing to read anything and I have loved a book from most every genre. I have loved Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Contemporary, Romance, Auto-Biographies, Non-Fiction, Historical fiction, Literary fiction, Poetry, Paranormal, Horror, Graphic novels, Mystery (thank you Agatha Christie) Manga, and many other genres I am not thinking of at the moment, but the one big genre I seem to be missing to this list is this one: The Thriller.
I’m just gonna go right out there and say it: I’m scared of Thrillers. They intimidate the heck out of me. The only thriller I own is Sharp Objects and I haven’t even read it yet. As a whole I don’t even know where to begin with it. I peak out at thrillers through the bushes and wonder “Hey, could you possibly be for me?” It’s crazy because I love reading quite a few blogs who almost exclusively read and review thrillers and I stand in some sort of corner browsing and curious, but still in so many ways afraid…. and I have no idea why.
There are so many thrillers out there that have interested me in the idea of them, but when I go to pick them up I put them back down and say maybe next time. I even have some thrillers on my tbr that I’m super interested in reading, but there is something insane in my head that is keeping me from taking the plunge and letting myself enjoy the genre for what it is.
It’s also crazy because there are elements of thrillers that in theory should make it irresistible:
The psychological elements:
The mind is fascinating to me. Learning and reading about the minds darker parts reels me in.
The twisted nature:
(Why I love horror) To see how things can be warped and twisted to be something different from what it was but more grotesque and evil then it was before is fascinating to me. In some part of myself that’s an element that draws me more then any other.
The Crime:
I love crime TV. Bones, CSI, BlindSpot, Psych, even stuff like 24 and Prison Break (which are not really crime crime shows, but they are full of action and well crime so I’m including them) Their is something about the forensics and getting into the mind of a killer that is intriguing to me.
But then this is where I finally find my why. Movie thrillers and Tv Shows are so much fun to watch. They are fast-paced and entertaining and visually I’m always intrigued. However, I always wonder how that face-paced and live-action feel would be translated into written format in an entertaining way. (This is stupid logic I know, all I have to do is look at all the fast-based fantasies I own on my shelves to be proven wrong)
So here is my plead for you. If you have read a thriller that you have really enjoyed and feel like it would be a good read for me give me a recommendation. (BTW I’m a HUGE fan of cool premises, so if it’s a bit quirky or weird or you just find the premise to be really cool I’d love to hear about it) Help me get over my fear of thrillers! My fear doesn’t even make sense to me and I need some great books to knock some sense into my head.
Thank you for reading!
–Till next time!
I feel some pressure on my shoulders now but I am a thriller addict so I feel like I have to give you something at least… I remain impressed with The One by John Marrs, short chapters, different characters, very addictive, and you don’t have to wait until the end for something to happen because you’re hit with twists all through the novel. It’s not dark and not graphic, it’s a safe choice :-).

I just looked at the Goodreads synopsis and the premise!!!!! It sounds so interesting. It feels almost sci-fi-esque and I think it would be perfect! Just the whole swabbing to find your true love thing sounds cool! Thank you for the awesome recommendation!

Thanks Tiana. It’s not really sci-fi, just the idea of it luckily or I wouldn’t have liked it ;-).. I really hope you like it if you decide to read it 🙂

I figured that…. it’s definitely full on thriller. The element of it though makes me feel a bit better about it.

Also your blog is one of those I was talking about loving to read that reviews a lot of thrillers making me so tantalized by them, but still the fear lingers.

Thrillers stress me the hell out! I enjoy them, but find that I read them so fast because I need a resolution. They give me so much anxiety!

It does sound like you enjoy them though, because even through the stress the need for a resolution keeps you coming back.

I have this theory that books that would have been labelled horror a few years ago are all now being labelled thrillers as thrillers seem to be “in” at the moment so if you’re a horror fan I wouldn’t worry about reading a thriller.
Recently I’ve enjoyed Sometimes I Lie, Good Me, Bad Me and Stillhouse Lake.

Ohh I’ve seen some reviews of Good Me Bad Me and it was one of those that always intrigued me. I’m going to have to check out the other two!

I think it’s LGBTQ for me 😢

Aww… I think if you started with an LGBT book in a genre you love with maybe a gender fluid or Asexual character it might ease you into it.

If you haven’t read any Dan Brown I highly suggest reading his books. I feel like they are more historical thriller/mystery.

That sounds intriguing! I will definitely look into it.

They are intriguing especially if you’re into secret societies and symbolism. His most well known book is definitely The DaVinci Code.

I love the movie of that one! It was so fascinating to watch. I don’t know how accurate to the book it was, but it definitely got me thinking.

I read the book and then watched the movie. The movie is close to the book, but in my honest opinion the book is better.

That’s good to know! I will be sure to check it out then, especially because I already know I really enjoyed the movie. Thanks for the recommendation!

No problem. And the DaVinci Code is part of a series, but the books don’t have to be read in any sort of order.

I love me some thrillers!! I can understand where you are coming from, though. It’s a genre that I feel is just…overwhelmed with options and it’s hard to choose which ones will be good. When you find an author who does a good job, you definitely want to hold on to them!
The main reason I love psyhcological thrillers is what you mentioned before: The psychology behind it, getting into someone’s mind and seeing what makes them tick.
Some of my favorites are:
I See You by Clare Mackintosh (my review is here: https://thebookcoverjudge.wordpress.com/2017/04/21/review-i-see-you-by-clare-mackintosh/)
You by Caroline Kepnes
Black-Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin
One Step Too Far by Tina Seskis
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (this is probably my favorite out of Flynn’s work)
Night Film by Marisha Pessl (this one has a slow start but is really good once you get into it)

Thank you for recommending me so many interesting looking books! I think quite of few of them are of the variety that would help ease me into the genre (especially because they are psychological)
I think the being overwhelmed with options part was another reason I haven’t allowed myself to take the plunge into the genre. There are just so many!

The genre is incredibly saturated. It’s tough knowing which ones to pick. But I tried to pick a variety of different “types”, if you will. Hopefully some of those will work for you. I look forward to hear what you think if you get to any of them =]

I do love thrillers but have a hard time finding one that I really enjoy. For me, mystery/crime is a genre I rarely touch. I like crime shows but for some reason I have a hard time connecting with the books

That’s the issue that I have felt that I might have (although I really loved Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None by Agatha Christy) They all make me a bit nervous, because I want to love them but I feel so unsure.

Oohh I love thrillers but there are so many and I never know which one to read! I loved the Millennium series though (the girl with the dragon tattoo, The girl who played with fire, the girl who kicked the hornets nest). They’ve been made into movies, but if you watch them, please watch the Scandinavian ones and not thr American remakes!

I’ve heard a lot of great things about the Millennium series and I will be honest it’s one of the series that I’ve been the most nervous about in the genre (for what feels like no reason) If I get to watch the movies I will be sure to look at the Scandinavian ones!

I recently read The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and I loved it! It’s very addictive and not too long so it could be a good read for you 🙂

I’ve seen this book everywhere and I honestly feel really nervous about it, but I will definitely check it out!

My can’t do genre is probably horror. It’s funny that you can stomach horror novels but not thrillers, cause I’m the other way around. I’m scared I’ll stay up all night thinking about horror novels. D: Thrillers on the other hand I could do all day. I read Sharp Objects last year and it’s definitely twisted, but not terrifying!

I think one of my issues with the genre is that there are so many types of thrillers and I don’t know what would be for me, but this makes me feel excited for Sharp Objects… hopefully I can get myself to read it soon.

I recommend the Webtoon called Bastard and the manga Monster! You said you have a hard time reading thrillers rather than watching, so maybe reading something visual would help!

Aww thank you! I’m definitely going to check that one out. The visual of it seems like it would be a great help so I’m excited for this one!

Which one? Both I highly recommend (though maybe Bastard a little bit more, as I’ve actually finished that one!) And I thought visuals could help!

They’ve definitely been popular lately. I decide not to read them because I don’t want to read about something that could really mess with me. I have nightmares about really violent and dark stuff. I’m read some lighter ones in the YA genre, but not adult ones except for mysteries like Agatha Christie or something lol.
LikeLiked by 1 person
If they cause you nightmares then it’s probably not the best idea for you to read them. I hardly ever get nightmares other then ones about losing my family. (Even horror movies don’t affect me like that) but I understand reading Agathas books because they are pretty light and not that twisted well at least from the two I have read.

I think that you would enjoy Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough. Don’t look up reviews, as there are, unfortunately, some that give spoilers – but the publicity campaign featured the hashtag “WTF That Ending”, which sums it up perfectly. And, it is a little quirky… but I’ll say no more!

I like that hashtag…. plus a quirky read sounds lovely. It also sounds like it’s best to go into it blind. I look forward to the day I get to read it (because I really believe I will)

Ah I’m really funny about thrillers too- it always takes me ages to read them, but I enjoy most of the ones I read, so I don’t know why I’m rarely in the mood for them. I’d definitely recommend Ice Twins, Gone Girl and Engleby- all of them are great and I hope you enjoy them if you check them out!
