Synopsis:

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

Musings: 

First off I’m setting All the trigger warnings out right here. This book has a lot of messed up parts in it. It is at times gruesome. If that isn’t for you, consider yourself warned. 

I did it! I survived reading my first ever thriller and I will say I’m intrigued by the genre and hope to read many more in the future. 

I didn’t really get into this book until a little before the introduction of Camille’s cutting began. At that point that’s when I really found myself in awe with the unsettling and amazingly written descriptions. One of my favorites even made my stomach feel unsettled (which surprisingly doesn’t happen very easily). It was about Alan, Adora’s husband eating sardines on a cake plate and Camille thinking that she could imagine the sound of tiny bones cracking. Well placed atmospheric quotes like this one are the points that made me really become enraptured in the story and the messed up nature that is this entire book. 

What amazed me about this book was how incredibly real all the characters felt. Not the smallest character felt 2-D and that’s thanks again to the descriptions. Details about mannerisms and mini-backstories of characters that made them feel like they had real lives and thoughts and motivations, this is what made this book feel so well-done. 

If you like evocative, insane, and possibly unhealthy stories that give a twisted play on human nature, this book is for you. I’m still reeling about the ending. This book was incredible.
