Synopsis:
MAGIC RULES. WE SERVE.
In a darkly fantastical debut set in modern-day Britain, magic users control everything: wealth, politics, power—and you. If you’re not one of the ultimate one-percenters—the magical elite—you owe them ten years of service. Do those years when you’re old, and you’ll never get through them. Do them young, and you’ll never get over them.
This is the darkly decadent world of Gilded Cage. In its glittering milieu move the all-powerful Jardines and the everyday Hadleys. The families have only one thing in common: Each has three children. But their destinies entwine when one family enters the service of the other. They will all discover whether any magic is more powerful than the human spirit.
Have a quick ten years. . . .
Opening Sentence: “She heard the motorbike first, then the galloping horse- two distant points of noise in the darkness, converging on her as she ran.”
Musings:
The Gilded Cage is magical, political, and brimming with intensity. It challenges the political atmosphere of this mystical world and it pushes the reader to think of how they could challenge the patriarchy in our own politically charged environment.
Flowing various points of views we get to know characters that we both want to love and sometimes hate depending on who and the circumstances. However my favorite character to follow by a long shot was Luke’s. I have to admit that at first I didn’t really know what to make of Luke. He seemed a little reluctant to deal with the cards he had been given and at first felt a little bit selfish. However, as time went on and I really felt I got to understand his character he became someone I wanted to root for, even someone to admire. He really grew throughout the novel and I’m excited to see what he decides to do in book two!
Abi ended up being the complete opposite. I really enjoyed and related to her character at first, but as time went on I started to question some of her choices and while she was the grown up sibling in the beginning, I felt that her role switched with Luke as the pressure of really tough choices weighed on them both.
What makes this book so unique is how rich it is in its own history and political agenda. The government system and way of acting plays a huge role in this book and it is something I wish more ya books had. It is so well thought out and beautifully written and I can’t help but feel like gushing a bit over it.
Honestly, I simply want to push everyone to read it just to get the really different perspectives good and bad and to see what sort of thoughts it would produce in others minds to take action in their own lives. Gilded Cage is timely and charged with an energy that can be felt by all who choose to read it.

Till next time!
