Every year I try to pursue Nanowrimo and every year I fail. I fail because of life. I fail because I have so many things I want to do. I fail because I can’t seem to sit myself down and write 1,500 words in one sitting. One year, I swear I will pursue and complete this challenge, but now is not the time.
I have a lot of things going on in my personal life. I have a lot of obligations I have to fill. I also, have this urge to watch some movies. Plus, I’ve had the feeling of wanting to binge all of Shane Dawson’s You-tuber documentaries. I’m also working a lot trying to make some extra money for Christmas. I simply don’t have the time.
This does not mean I won’t be writing at all. I’m currently writing a new book idea that has required no outlining what-so-ever and basically just lives in my brain waiting to be written. This book would have been perfect for Nanowrimo, but still, I have a couple of other obligations I’m working on on the side.
Sometimes, you have to look at your life and say to yourself that your not going to pile up a billion things. I have a tendency to do that to myself. To say I’m going to do this thing and that thing and adding too many things till I burn out. So for now I’m just going to stick with what I have.
This month no doubt is going to be a productive one. However, writing a whole book is not going to be in the cards. That’s fine by me for now. I’m going to try and balance some enjoyment and productivity this month. I think that is a good goal.
Nanowrimo is an amazing thing. So many amazing writers go on and tackle their stories and make them real. I’m going to continue on that same path, but I’m taking a slow and steady approach to it. I have so much I want to do. I think it’s not so bad to try and balance everything out a bit.
Thanks for reading! Are you doing Nanowrimo? I’d love to hear your thoughts down in the comments below!
-Till next time!
LOVE this post! I think there is a lot of pressure surrounding Nanowrimo since it seems like everyone is doing it. It’s good that you are doing what is best for you. I tried it one year and it did not go well because I’m always busy with school during November. Maybe one year after I graduate law school I’ll finally be able to do it.

Yeah we should all take into consideration our priorities instead of over working ourselves.. it’s also a thanksgiving month.. there’s a lot to do in November as it is.

Is there a particular reason why it’s November? I always did find it odd that they choose Thanksgiving month for it.

I have no idea.. that could be something cool to look up though.

It can be a lot of pressure to do it! That can be helpful if you have the time to do it and just need a push, but it can be a problem for students especially since November is finals season for the Fall semester. I had to skip it entirely during university as well. Maybe you really will be able to do it once you leave- or you can do the July Camp Nanowrimo instead!

You’re so right. It has to fit in and around the other stuff in life and each year that can mean a different thing:)

I started so well but have stalled these last three days 🙈

I am not a writer. I would be too much under pressure if I did this. But I think real life is more important. Do what works for you. Have fun

Writing over 1500 words a day is like SUPER hard. So what I do for Nanowrimo is, I just try to write something everyday, even if it’s just 50 words.
Loved this post! ❤️❤️❤️

That’s great! I’m glad that at least you get something written during that time! That’s really inspiring!

I’ve been there, Tiana! I did NaNoWriMo for three years straight (2012, 2013, and 2014). Then, my wedding was in November 2015, so I haven’t had the time to participate. Until now! I’ve written nearly 8,000 words of a brand-new story since November 1st, and I feel invigorated. Everyone is different.

I’m not doing Nanowrimo as well. This is for the first time in 9 years. And I think that’s okay. Also, if you enter Nano, don’t write to win but write to get started. That way you will never be under pressure. Just my thoughts 🙂

That’s true! Thanks for the advice! I will take it to heart.

NaNoWriMo is not
for everyone, every year.
Here is one writer who made
a judgement and took the
pressure off ..
I WANT the pressure on my
shoulders this year and I know
she’ll understand that feeling
within me right now 🌸

I am in a similar position. It’s a great strategy of your life, and your head, are in the right pkace. If not, it could simply bring a sense of guilt.

That’s very true! Understanding where you are and what you know your capable of doing or not doing is important.

I think it’s easy to feel obligated to participate in NaNoWriMo. Not only do you feel obligated, you see what feels like the entirety of the writing and reading community joining in on the fun. You start to get a serious case of FOMO. I hate feeling like I’m missing out on the fun; however, I’ve noticed that NaNoWriMo is source of stress for me rather than fun. I think after this NaNoWriMo I’m going to have to sit out on the bench for the same reasons you provided in this post. Thanks for sharing!

I’m glad that you could relate to my post! I always try to join nano and fail and I know I don’t have time at all this time anyway so I’m not going to pile up something new unnecessarily.

Here from Viola Bleu’s reblog.
I totally understand. NaNoWriMo definitely is not for everyone. And it surely isn’t always the past time. We are all different. What works for me might not work for you and vice versa.
Kudos to you for giving it a go in the past. That’s why I’m doing it this year (for the first time) – to push myself and just see what it is about. I might finish, or I might not, but I do realize that 50k on November 30 isn’t the only goal here for me.
Kudos for recognizing the reality of your situation. Not everyone can balance things.
Good luck with your non-Nano related duties.

Thanks so much! It was a tough decision, but I feel better about it. I have a lot of stuff going on and I’ve been working 6-7 days a week so really I’d have stretched myself way too far by trying to add this on top of that.

Sounds like you could use some time off soon.

That’s for sure! I know however that that is far off yet.

I’ve only participated in NaNoWriMo only a couple times myself, but have lately just never had a story idea in mind for it. I find for me it’s only doable if I at least have a story for it. Otherwise I just don’t really see the point in participating.

I always have plenty of ideas, but life this time has other plans for me.

I never seem to have ideas when it’s this time of year. Or if I do it’s not always good ones.

I’m doing NaNoWriMo this year – for about the third or fourth time, I think. I have failed every time in the past, but think I might actually finish it this time. I got GOOD at failing lol

Actually it’s the same with me. I got really good at failing nano. But really it was good at stressing me out and this month I really don’t need any extra stress. Good luck with your project!

This was really an inspiring post. I usually have the tendency to have lots of goals and not actually achieving it at all. And when I realized that I couldn’t do everything at once, I decided to tackle one at a time.
I also didn’t take the pledge even though I looked forward to it. I only started yesterday to write a new book, but it’s not for Nano.
Anyway, best of luck with your book and job.

It’s something I had to learn to do. To not pile up everything all at once and take things a little slower and it’s helped my sanity so much! It also helps me not get tired so quickly.

I completely agree—Nanowrimo is great and all but it’s so time consuming! I think I’ll try next year but I have a lot to do right now too. Good luck if you do it next year!
