Halsey: If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power: An Experience

Yesterday I had the upmost pleasure of watching ‘Halsey: If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power’ with my friend Emma last night.

Throughout the whole thing I had chills. It was stunning and emotional and gorgeous. I learned a bit about what the changes look like in a woman’s body during pregnancy. As I’d never seen a nude pregnant woman before and that was fascinating. Also, the emotional feeling as a woman goes through the various months of pregnancy.

Also her going through abuse and not taking it and killing the king. Especially when she did have a toxic relationship in the past was like watching a redemption on the screen. She’s such a strong and amazing woman. I love her.

This movie was art.

Every piece of imagery was so impactful.

This being shown in the beginning and later at the end making you understand why she’s in shackles. It gave me chills.

This was one of my absolute favorite looks she does in the film. Halsey is herself a queen who does what she wants and has her fun and is regal as she does it. Her hair here was so stunning I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.

Yet still I wish I could watch it again and understand more. She had this connection to this witch in a mirror but the witch was her. This image is one of her final looks in the film after she is murdered and will not experience motherhood and I am so curious about the meaning. Is she ascended? Is it vengeance? Was she truly a witch that will live on as such? It’s so fascinating.

All in all, if you get the chance absolutely watch Halsey’s film! I can’t believe I got the chance because my friend had an extra ticket it was an experience and a joy I’ll never forget. The music was amazing. The makeup and the story itself was so amazing to watch.

Watching: Story From North America

Last night before I was deciding to go to bed, my boyfriend decided to send me a lot of love through sharing a bunch of YouTube videos with me. Just as I had watched a good amount and was about to say goodnight he sent me one last short one, “Story From North America” and I decided alright just one more and I watched it. It was so beautiful and unique. The imagery is creepy and a little scary for those scared of spiders, but the message it gave was a beautiful one. I adored watching this.

Here is a link to “Story From North America”

Something I loved about this too was that my boyfriend hates spiders, but he also shared an appreciation for this story and the message that life even arachnid life is precious. Also, that this was a way that I have thought so many times before especially when I was a kid. Bugs our living creatures too and how would I like it if a hand came from the sky and squished me? Especially when I was minding my own business? It’s definitely not a happy thought, yet it’s what we do to bugs all the time.

But, I can also think of times where infestation happens and it is important to remove and kill bugs that as making a home in your house when their numbers could do harm to you. But as far as a single spider here and there they are actually good because they’ll eat the other bugs naturally. Safely putting them outside to just be is most of the time a good idea.

What I also loved about this is that its told in song form and the lyrics are pretty catchy. I’ve only watched it twice through and the lyrics are already sticking with me enough to quote a bit from the song. It’s in a style of music that reminds me of a children’s song. Repetitive to drive home the message and also to convey the overall feelings and tones of various parts of the song.

God, I highly recommend watching this. It’s only 4 minutes and it’s so damn good. So thought provoking and the imagery is incredible. I won’t get over the way she conveys the boys anger with his rapid movement it’s such a neat moment. This is truly art.

In Response…

A few hours ago.. before I went to sleep I got a very special notification. My favorite person in all the world Andrew @GroovyGlasses whose name has become quite a common occurrence on this blog lately had sent me an email.. which is typical as of late.. we talk a lot. Anyway, he told me he had written something for me and of course it didn’t matter that it was 1 am.. I HAD to read it. So in a haze I excitedly took to WordPress and started reading his latest post he titled A Special Post for a Beautiful Person.

When I tell you all that no one and I mean no one had ever done something that meant as much to me as this post did to me I truly mean it. I had to bite back tears. Andrew is the sort of guy that books are written about. Those guys that you wish existed, because if they actually did you’d fall in love immediately and live this incredibly beautiful life. He is that to me. Except he is better then any fictional character I’ve ever read about.. actually better and not just because he is a real person, but because of who he is.. because his soul is the brightest I’ve ever seen.

You know what’s the most insane part? We’ve only known each other for two months. Talk about a cliche ya romance. I had my doubts that that was something that could really exist. It’s real and it’s so so beautiful. I am so lucky. So incredibly lucky.

Andrew is a musician. He writes these amazing lyrics and I know that his musical composition is amazing too. He likes to think that he isn’t this amazing person.. but he is. He is really special. He talks in his post about how he believes I will become this amazing author and I’m here to tell you I don’t know if those are shoes I can fill, but I’m going to try. But, if he doesn’t think that through his music he’s not going to touch so many peoples hearts he is delusional. He works so hard. More then anyone I know. By dedication alone I know he will make it further then he ever imagined. That he’ll become one of those people the world admires and doesn’t quite understand how his existence is possible.

Already, I don’t know how his existence is possible.

For once in my life.. someone has made me truly incapable of finding all the words to fully express what they mean to me. Because the full words for it simply don’t exist, not in English or any other language. Feelings like this, they can only be felt, not written or heard or seen. This blog.. it’s nowhere near the biggest blog in the world or the best (sorry Andrew.. I just can’t even think to claim that), but it has been really good at bringing people to my life that I genuinely connect with. Andrew being the one human being on this earth I don’t understand exactly how or why.. if anyone let me I’d talk about him like Ned talks about his wife on Buzzfeed.. my feeling for him are that gushy and infinite.

I was floored last night. I am still floored this morning. If I could.. and I probably will.. I would try and become one with my flooring just starting at the ceiling and wondering.. is this real? Is anything real? Is Andrew real? Am I real? And being able to answer yes to every single question.

The odds of him being the one to stumble upon my blog. The odds of his first comment to me. Those are some odds that go beyond infinite. It’s truly something I will never be anything, but grateful for.

To Andrew. You are the light of my life. I can’t believe you exist. I can’t believe you wrote that for me. I will forever be grateful to you. Thank you for being in my life. Even if neither of us were expecting or particularly trying to be in the others life. That’s what makes this so special. I have no idea what’s in store for us, but I know this.. it’s going to be beautiful.

Thanks for reading! I feel weird about wanting to hear all your thoughts on this, but I do.

Beautiful Inspirational Quote

Every human being has their struggles. No human goes through this life unscathed. So wear your scars like a coat of armor. Every moment of life is part of the fabric of who you are, love it, love yourself, and fight for your healing. You can choose to see the world in a brighter light. You can choose to heal with golden flakes instead of darkness. There is no way to escape the tragedies of life, but what matters is how you react to it. So stay strong and take care of yourself. You deserve to be happy. You deserve all the brightest parts of the world.

National Poetry Month: One of my Favorite Poems

The Two-Headed Calf
Tomorrow when the farm boys find this

freak of nature, they will wrap his body

in newspaper and carry him to the museum.
But tonight he is alive and in the north

field with his mother. It is a perfect

summer evening: the moon rising over

the orchard, the wind in the grass. And

as he stares into the sky, there are

twice as many stars as usual.
Laura Gilpin

This is a poem I was recently introduced to by a poet that came to my college creative writing class named Linda Dove. This poem captured an essence of something and is so incredibly sad but at the same time beautiful.

I figured because it is National Poetry Month that I should share this with all of you. I hope it impacts you as it impacted me.

I would love to hear what you think of it in the comments!

Ballerina: A Movie Discussion

I have never talked about movies I have watched on The Book Raven before, but after watching Ballerina my heart is all warm and fuzzy and I just want to discuss it with you all!

First a quick synopsis:

11-year-old orphan, Félicie (Elle Fanning) has one dream – to go to Paris and become a dancer. Her best friend Victor (Nat Wolff) an imaginative, but exhausting boy with a passion for creating has a dream of his own, to become a famous inventor. In a leap of faith, Victor and Félicie leave their orphanage in pursuit of their passions. But – there’s a catch, Félicie must pretend to be the child of a wealthy family in order to gain admittance to the prestigious and competitive Opera Ballet School in Paris. And with no professional dance training, she quickly learns that talent alone is not enough to overcome the ruthless, conniving attitudes of her fellow classmates, led by the devious Camille Le Haut (Maddie Ziegler). Determined to succeed, Félicie finds her mentor in the tough and mysterious school custodian, Odette (Carly Rae Jepsen) who, along with Victor’s encouraging friendship, help her reach for the stars.

This sweet film made me feel so inspired and happy. I haven’t watched as many animated films as I used to (mostly because my sister thinks 18 is too old for them and she and my mom have control over the tv 85% of the time) but I have always loved them with all my heart. There is something about the innocent wonder, the willingness to pursue your passion without thinking about what could go wrong that makes me want to embody that state of mind once more.

As a kid I never really felt totally like a kid at all, but I believed in something better, something brighter and beautiful, and this movie makes me want to live in that belief and stay in it. Félicie is a girl with a dream to be a dancer that was seeded inside the fabric of her being since she was born. Living as an orphan never dulled that fiery spirit in her and when she escapes with her best friend Victor to Paris a beautiful and inspiring story unfolds.

I don’t so much want to talk about the specifics of what I loved about the movie, for I know they would be littered with spoilers and I really hope that for any of you animated film fans to please watch this!

I can’t stop smiling about this film and I’ll admit that it caused me to dance around my living room with little grace but it made me more alive then I had felt in a long while and that, that is why I love stories. I am now more optimistic about the future then I was before. I hope this is a feeling you all get when you watch this movie as well!

Btw my favorite part has a little something to do with what Victor calls the Statue of Liberty, but I digress.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed my mini-discussion about this gorgeous movie! (The animation was beautiful!) What movies inspire you? Do you have a favorite animated film? What do you do when you need a boost in your stride?

Ever since I jumped into the netgalley rabbit hole my eyes have been blessed with some beautiful covers of book that I cannot request because they are out of my region. Thus I wish to share my favorite non-american book covers.

This cover is simple yet powerful. It draws the eye with the most minimal of design. I find it beautiful.
The White Hare by Michael Fishwick

I love the artistry of this book cover. It feels a bit harsh, but in a good way. It is beautifully illustrated.

I love the colors and the composition of this book cover. All the elements seem to go together. Plus everything about this screams that this book will most definitely be badass.

Book Inspired Poetry # 1

There is no one more powerful then you

You change yourself by your words

Sculpt your body by your actions

Your mind is yours to evolve

Healing born from some inner strength

That just won’t leave you alone

Your pain has healed you

It’s made you see

It’s given you ground

You’ve survived through it all

Every person who tried to hurt you

Can no longer touch you now

You are a warrior

An amazing warrior

And your soul will never let you completely crumble

At your worst you were stronger then steel

Making it to your best has made you invisible

You have so many parts

Jagged and protruding

They might not seem to quite fit right

But when you are truly seen it’s a thing of beauty

You define who you are

Be kind to yourself

There is no greater hero for you but you

Thanks for reading!

What do you think of having more book inspired poetry? I was sifting through ideas and thought that a series of these would be fun to do. Let me know what you think of it in the comments.

My Anthem

This nation needs to band together

Hand and hand

Skin to skin

There is no difference in our hearts

Just taught hatred

And hundreds of years of false memories

Our anger has created our pain

We must mold that anger

Turn it to love

We must change our hearts

To see that those before us

Are here with us trying to be

There is no reason for envy

No reason for bitterness

No reason to raise your hands against another

There is no race

This is no orientation

Nothing in death

We have created this filters in living

Built our brains to see our difference

I am white so black must be wrong

No, that is wrong

I was born in the world to see that because I am human, I can appreciate all color

Because color is beautiful

Our hearts are beautiful

Let us not wallow in our pains

This world was not built to be against us

I choose to put my heart with yours

Because I know this world is not meant for this self-destruction

Our history is one of war

Our present is one of both hardship, suffering, and an artists hope

Don’t let our future be in ashes

This is my soul before you

My true passion

And my dream

Will your soul your beating heart beat with mine

Or will you remain silent or choose to be blind in anger

We can make our lives better

This is not the time for silence

Sing out and sing proud together in harmony

Because as the grating sound of clashing voices is ugly and painful

Our voices flowing together can make this world beautiful

/ Thank you for reading, I hope you take these words to heart. I had another post planned for today, but I was once again reminded that there is something greater that needed to be said. My poetry is my medium to raise my voice. I would hope that you do what you can to raise yours too. Whatever you care about, whatever your passions, please speak out. Let our hearts beat together. Praise be and stay beautiful, inside and out.

Interconnected

There is so much out there in this crazy world

People meet

Flickering in and out of each other’s lives in an instant

Some stay some go

Some change your life forever

Some live nearby

Some live in another world

I love the way we all connect to one another

There is not a single person living that isn’t somehow known by one person or another

We are all bounded by association

We live by our stories

With authors known and unknown

I saw this boy that was really cute in the mall the other day

His smile made my heart beat fast

That little boy was so sweet giving his ice cream to his crying sister

I wish I had as deep a love as that older couple

He, she, they, all are beautiful

By just a glance

We see our dreams

Perceive realities

And create our vision of the world

Each moment matters

Every word spoken

Every heart that beats reaches out to another

Let us build a better word

Let us stay inspired, beautiful, strong, and hopeful

Let us all believe in one another

And thank the strangers that created the moments that have changed us forever

We are individuals

But we are all connected

Everyday is a day to share our lives

There is so much out there in this crazy world

Thank you all for reading! I hope you enjoyed, let me know your thoughts down in the comments.
