Watching: The Suicide Squad

Another fun movie night with my best friend last night. This time it was my choice and of course my excitement lead me to choosing ‘The Suicide Squad’. I knew the day before that this is what I wanted to watch and I’m very proud of my choice.

Looking at this poster, everything you need to know about this movie is right there. It was so much fun to watch. To my surprise, the same night my boyfriend texted me that he was watching this with his sister. I know he hasn’t seen any of the other movies related to this which is why I was shocked. This movie is definitely a stand alone so it didn’t matter. But, I was also excited cause I had already told my best friend I was going to watch this with her that night.

One thing this movie did was further increase my crush on Harley Quinn.

Harley’s growth is something I think everyone’s been talking about that’s seen the movie. She’s owned by no one and she saves herself and becomes more free in who she is as a person and I adore this for her! Every scene she was in was gold and watching her on the screen made me so happy. She’s witty and unpredictable and so strong and wild and free and one of the most amazing heroes in this film. I love her.

I now want a rat named Sebastian. This little guy I loved from the very beginning. He’s so adorable and has such a big personality. So many of the funniest and quirkiest moments in the film included him. I would die for Sebastian.

Rat catcher and Bloodsport had some of the most wholesome moments in the whole film. I wanted to give them both a hug so many times. I just adored them.

King shark a.k.a sharky boy or just sharky to me gave me so many laughs. I loved every moment he was on screen. He also caused some of the most gruesome deaths, but the balance he had as a character made me forgive him. I loved him too.

I thought at the beginning I wouldn’t care much about this character, but I did. His mom being everywhere was hilarious. Plus his power was so awesome looking. He was so fun to watch.

All in all, I absolutely had a blast watching the suicide squad. It’s a delightful film with dumb humor that was perfect for my heart. I’m definitely going to be rewatching in the future for the pure enjoyment of it.

I Am Not Starfire: A Review

I Am Not Starfire by Mariko Tamaki

Illustrated by Yoshi Yoshitani

My Rating: 4 stars

Cover Rating: 7/10 it’s really pretty! The artwork is really well done and it very much shows the major theme of the comic.

Publisher: DC comics

Publish Date: July 27th, 2021

Number of Pages: 208 pages

Received: Dc Comics provided an e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis:

Mandy is NOT like her mother. Starfire is gorgeous, tall, sparkly, and a hero. Mandy is NOT a sparkly superhero. Mandy has no powers, is a kid who dyes her hair black and hates everyone but her best friend Lincoln.

Suddenly, everything changes when she gets partnered with Claire for a school project. Mandy likes Claire a lot (even if she denies it, heartily and intensely). How do you become the person you’re supposed to be when the only thing you’re sure of is what you’re not? When someone from Starfire’s past arrives, Mandy must make a choice: give up before the battle has even begun, or step into the unknown and risk everything to save her mom.

Opening Sentence: “All my life I’ve been the kid of a superhero.”

Musings:

I really liked reading this. It was a fun little graphic novel. Mandy’s characterization is very clear, she never developed powers and due to media attention and all the endless questions she grows up wanting to be different to be the ‘Anti-Starfire’. As the story moves along she realizes she never truly was that and her desire wasn’t to be against her mom, but to be an individual.

What I Enjoyed:

The art! Yoshi has a really adorable and pretty art style. Just look at some of these teaser images! Says so much even without words.

The friendship. Mandy has one really great friend in her life that gets her and treats her like an individual and not the product of someone else. He supports her and teases her throughout the story and I love their relationship.

It feels like an introduction. This feels like reading the origin story to a fun new set of comics based on Mandy becoming her own unique superhero. It’ll be so fun to see where this story goes.

All in All:

This was a fun little read. I read it in about 30 minutes and I really enjoyed it. It was cute and seeing first love play out while mixing in the angst was really fun to read.

House of El: Book One: The Shadow Threat: A Review

House of El: Book One: The Shadow Threat by Claudia Gray

Illustrated by. Eric Zawadzki

My Rating: 4 stars!

Cover Rating: 10/10 the art is stunning! Perfect art style for this story I adore all the art!

Publisher: DC Comics

Publish Date: January 5th, 2021

Number of Pages: 208

Received: DC Comics provided a physical copy in exchange for an honest review.

Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis:

Welcome to a brand-new vision of one of comics’ most famous tragedies from New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray and illustrator Eric Zawadzki. In this first graphic novel in a trilogy, explore Krypton like never before: through the eyes of two teenagers on opposite sides of the same extinction-level event.

Zahn is one of Krypton’s elites: wealthy, privileged, a future leader. Sera is one of Krypton’s soldiers: strong, dedicated, fearless. Their rule-bound society has ordained that their paths should never cross.

But groundquakes are shaking the planet’s surface. Rebellious uprisings are shaking the populace. Krypton’s top scientists–Jor-El and Lara–conduct a secret experiment that is meant to reform their planet from the cellular level up. Zahn and Sera must join forces to investigate the hidden dangers truly threatening Krypton. In the process, they form a bond that will endure past the end of the world…

Opening Sentence: “Wake up!”

Musings: As someone who has never read any Superman comics and has not watched Superman since I was a kid, I liked that I could still gain a sense of the world and an understanding of events in an easy way. The beautiful art helps immensely and paints the picture of an advanced world that has lost the value of emotion allowing growth and change in society. Everyone is made perfect and emotionless. A cool and calculated mind.

What I Loved:

The idea of the world. This is a society that has progressed so far that minds are made so perfect there is no desire to progress. Due to this, the rich live a life that doesn’t acknowledge that the world is unstable and falling apart. In order to fix this, experiments to give back emotions to a select few begin and through contrast these people find the desire to search for solutions to fix the world they live in that is beginning to break apart.

The art. There’s so much color and action on every page. It depicts the desperation of the world lived in and the comfort of the Rich’s lives. It’s beautiful and I love it.

All in all:

This comic is the start of a fun, action-filled adventure. I’m excited to see how Zahn and Sera band together in order to help save their world and restore their humanity along with it.

Victor and Nora: A Gotham Love Story… My Review

Victor and Nora: A Love Story by Lauren Myracle and Illustrated by Isaac Goodhart

My Rating: 4 stars!

Cover Rating: 10/10 it’s Gorgeous! It perfectly shows the essence of the story. It’s just so beautiful to look at.

Publisher: DC Comics

Publish Date: November 3rd, 2020

Number of Pages: 200

Received: Netgalley provided an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis:

New York Times bestselling author Lauren Myracle (ttyl, ttfn) and artist Isaac Goodhart (Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale) reunite in this gorgeous YA story about living life to the fullest, and how far one will go for love.

Seventeen-year-old Victor Fries has a cold heart. After his brother died in a tragic house fire for which Victor feels responsible, his parents have isolated themselves, and Victor has dedicated his whole life to one thing: science.

Nora Faria is full of life. She is suffering from an incurable illness that will slowly consume her, so she’s decided to live her last days to the fullest at her summer home outside of Gotham City until her birthday. On that day, she plans to take her own life.

When Victor and Nora happen to meet at the cemetery outside of town, they are astonished to find the connection they have each been missing in their lives. Their summer quickly spirals into a beautiful romance, and Victor’s cold heart begins to thaw, allowing him to enjoy life just a little more. But when Victor learns of Nora’s illness, he’s driven to try to find a solution to keep from losing another person he loves…by any means necessary.

Victor & Nora: A Gotham Love Story is a tragic tale about living life to the fullest and what it truly means to love…and to let go.

Opening Sentence: “You ever catch this many, Otto?”

Musings:

This comic was really cute. It had beautiful art work and a sad and blooming story and I wanted to know more after it ended.

What I loved:

Victor. He reminds me so much of my boyfriend while also being completely different. The intelligence. The want for a future that is totally different from the way things are now. The want to be right and the way Victor cares for Nora. It endeared me to Victor because of those qualities that feel familiar to me. Even while understanding there’s many things that made him flawed. He felt real and three dimensional and I loved that.

Nora. She was super sweet and full of life. That’s the biggest thread in this story. Nora is dealing with an unimaginable fate. Death in her face every single day. She continually chooses to cling to life and I loved to see it.

The clear DC elements. This felt like a clear DC story. Victor being so deeply focused in science and Nora with her illness giving her episodes that are purely fantastical. It made for a really fun read!

All in all:

I really loved this comic. I don’t want to spoil any of it. It’s really beautifully done and at times humorous and heartfelt. It’s very much worth the read.

Watching: The Harley Quinn Show: Season 1

I watched The Harley Quinn Show season 1 a while back and enjoyed the hell out of it. It’s fun and dark, but also a bit crazy in a good way. I adored every moment of watching it!

The trailer for your viewing pleasure:

https://youtu.be/mT7A5-oxR3o

What I love most about The Harley Quinn show is that even with the bit of gore that it has it has this humor that is based in very mundane day to day things. Harley and Ivy argue over stupid little things about living together while beating the hell out of people. The contrast along with the gorgeous art made me smile the whole way through!

What I’ve enjoyed so much about the show is that it’s really about Harley getting over a sucky relationship with The Joker who doesn’t care about her or her well-being whatsoever. Harley had been drawn to him again and again and it’s only when she realizes that she’s the one who created herself and gets to create herself everyday that she sets herself free. It’s this awesome storyline that follows the entire season. She learns to build her own friendships and her own unique empire and strength and it’s amazing! It was super awesome!

I’m so in love with this Walt little family that works together to help Harley claim her personal power. I felt so strong and joyful watching it. I just remember how happy it made me with every episode. I highly recommend it!

I also greatly loved Kite Man. He has this humor and sense of clumsiness that made me laugh every moment he was on screen. He was hilarious. I think this photo alone tells you all you need to know about him.

All in all, I love this show. It was a delight to watch and raised my mood immensely. It’s one of those things that I feel I’ll love to go back and watch just to feel good. It’s so great!
